In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 627 government schools are non-functional, with 226 of them closed solely due to the unavailability of teachers.

According to the annual School Census Report of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Education Department, 411 of the non-functional schools are located in the merged districts, while 216 are in the settled districts.

The report states that 66 government schools are non-functional due to a lack of students, while 28 schools are closed because of disputes. Illegal occupation has also been reported at 11 government schools.

According to the data, North Waziristan has the highest number of non-functional schools at 111, followed by Upper South Waziristan with 99 and Upper Kohistan with 68.

The report shows that there are 53 non-functional government schools in Kurram, 45 in Sub-Division Wazir Bannu, 44 in Bannu, 29 in Lower Kohistan and 27 in Khyber.

Similarly, there are 16 non-functional schools in Hangu, 13 in Battagram, seven in Mansehra, six in Tank, five in Peshawar, four each in Charsadda and Swat, and three in Shangla. Lakki Marwat and Nowshera have two non-functional government schools each.

Mardan, Karak, Kohat and Swabi each have one non-functional government school.
