Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has signaled a possible attack on Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, stating that his elimination would not escalate the conflict but rather help bring it to an end.
In an interview with an Australian TV channel, Netanyahu was asked whether Israel intended to assassinate the Iranian leader. He responded, “We will do whatever is necessary.”
He added that removing Khamenei would not lead to further war, but would instead aid in ending it.
Trump Vetoed Israeli Plan to Kill Khamenei
According to a foreign news agency, former U.S. President Donald Trump had previously vetoed an Israeli plan to assassinate Ayatollah Khamenei.
Senior American officials reportedly told the agency that “we can’t even discuss going after political leadership.”
Reacting to these reports, Netanyahu said that many incorrect claims have been made about his conversations with the former U.S. president. “I won’t get into these things. We do what we need to do and will continue to do so. America knows what is best for itself,” he stated.
Earlier, Israeli officials had also said that an attack on the Iranian Supreme Leader could not be ruled out. When asked whether Israel was attempting to target Khamenei, Israeli military spokesperson Efi Defrin declined to clarify, saying he would not comment on whether the Supreme Leader was a specific target.
