Pakistan has urged the international community to take immediate and decisive action to address the escalating challenges posed by climate change.

Representing Pakistan at the International Court of Justice, Attorney General Mansoor Awan emphasized the urgent need to confront the climate emergency, referencing UN Secretary-General António Guterres' 2022 address. "Humanity can no longer afford to ignore the looming climate crisis," Mansoor Awan stated.

Highlighting Pakistan’s disproportionate vulnerability, Awan noted that the country contributes less than 1% to global greenhouse gas emissions but faces a climate-induced mortality risk 15 times higher than many other nations.

The Attorney General outlined three critical points during his address:

  1. Paris Agreement as the Cornerstone: Awan reaffirmed that the Paris Agreement remains the fundamental framework for addressing climate responsibilities globally.
  2. Equity in Climate Responsibilities: He stressed that climate obligations, including financing, mitigation, and cooperation, should be guided by principles of equity and shared yet differentiated capabilities.
  3. Resolution Mechanisms within Agreements: Awan advocated for resolving disputes related to climate obligations through mechanisms embedded within international climate agreements.

The plea underscored Pakistan's commitment to fostering a global consensus on climate action and ensuring that nations contribute equitably to this collective fight against climate change.
