PESHAWAR: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an alert for the risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in the upper districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to rising temperatures and an ongoing spell of intense heat.
According to a PDMA spokesperson, the rapid melting of glaciers has increased the risk of glacial lake outburst floods, flash floods, and landslides in vulnerable mountainous areas.
The authority has directed the district administrations of Upper and Lower Chitral, Swat, Upper Dir, Kohistan, and Mansehra to take precautionary measures and remain on high alert. Officials have been instructed to continuously monitor sensitive glacial zones and ensure timely preparedness.
The PDMA has also directed rescue agencies to keep emergency personnel, equipment, and machinery on standby to respond to any potential disaster.

District administrations have been asked to issue timely warnings to at-risk communities and evacuate residents to safer locations if necessary.
The PDMA advised tourists to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from rivers, streams, and glacial areas during the alert period. The public has also been urged to avoid crossing rain-fed streams and fast-flowing water during rainfall.
In case of any emergency, citizens have been advised to contact the PDMA helpline at 1700, the spokesperson said.
