Leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Central, including Amir Abdul Wasi, General Secretary Sabir Hussain Awan, and District Khyber Amir Shah Faisal, have expressed serious concerns over a potential operation in Tirah.
They demanded that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi clarify his position on the matter and focus on the province’s issues instead of trips to Lahore.
They expressed these views during a press conference at Peshawar Press Club. The leaders stated that military operations cannot establish lasting peace.
If that were possible, they said, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa would have already been declared the country’s most peaceful province after numerous operations over the past 15 years.
They explained that operations in Khyber Agency began in 2006 under various names. Similarly, operations named Khyber One, Two, and Three were conducted in Tirah.
These operations caused enormous sacrifices for ordinary citizens, who were forced to leave their homes on just a few hours’ notice, with the sole aim of establishing peace in the area.
According to Jamaat-e-Islami leaders, an assessment of the outcomes of these operations shows that peace was not restored; instead, terrorism has increased with each passing day.
They said the government is now preparing for another operation in Tirah, which could result in over 250,000 people being displaced.
The leaders added that people have already begun migrating, but the public remains deeply concerned that they will once again be uprooted, their homes destroyed, and yet peace will still not be achieved.
They further noted that the Chief Minister claims on one hand that he will not allow an operation in Tirah, while on the other hand, arrangements for the affected people have already begun, revealing a clear contradiction.
Jamaat-e-Islami leaders emphasized that, in their view, operations are not a solution to the problems; such measures are more likely to increase terrorism rather than establish peace.
