The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has issued an alert to the district administrations of Haripur, Swabi and Nowshera over the possible operation of the Tarbela Dam's auxiliary spillway.
According to the PDMA, the auxiliary spillway may be operated for the first time during the next two days, which could increase water flow in the Indus River to low-to-medium flood levels.
The authority has directed the relevant district administrations to intensify monitoring along the riverbanks, complete all precautionary measures and ensure preparedness to respond to any emergency.
The PDMA has advised residents living in low-lying areas and along the banks of the Indus River to avoid unnecessary movement due to the possible spillway operation.

Citizens have also been urged to refrain from bathing, boating and fishing in the river, avoid taking livestock near the riverbanks, and ensure children do not go close to the river.
The district administrations of Haripur, Swabi and Nowshera have been instructed to continuously monitor vulnerable locations, raise public awareness and keep rescue services on high alert.
A PDMA spokesperson said the situation on the Indus River is being monitored closely and the public will be informed promptly of any significant developments.
The spokesperson also urged the public not to pay attention to rumours, to follow only official advisories, and to contact the local administration, relevant authorities or the PDMA helpline 1700 in case of any emergency.
