It is worth noting that PECA has been controversial since its enactment. Journalist groups have condemned it as an attack on freedom of expression. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has also criticized the ruling government’s ally, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), for supporting the bill.
Under the newly added Section 26(A) of PECA, legal action can be taken against those spreading false information online. The law states:
"Anyone who deliberately spreads fake news that causes fear, panic, or disorder in society shall be liable to imprisonment for up to three years, a fine of up to Rs. 2 million, or both."
