A centuries-old tradition came alive once again in Tando Ghulam Ali, Badin, where rare and valuable donkeys from across Pakistan gathered for the annual donkey market, one of Asia’s largest of its kind.
According to media reports, this vibrant market features donkeys and mules from Sindh, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.
The event, rooted in history since before the creation of Pakistan, now takes place annually on the 11th of Muharram.

This year’s market has donkeys priced between Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 500,000. Many of them bear quirky and striking names like Atom Bomb, Rocket Launcher, Kalashnikov, F-16, and G3. On the other end, donkeys named Madhuri, Reshma, Kashmala, Sharmila, Sheeri, Nazo, and Ruby have been adorned like brides, adding flair to the festive atmosphere.
In past decades, even during the Soviet-Afghan War, donkeys purchased from this market played a crucial role in transport and logistics.
With its unique charm and historical legacy, the Badin donkey market continues to be a symbol of cultural pride and rural heritage in Pakistan.
